Hawksmoor Air Street, W1

Hawksmoor Air Street combin Hawksmoor Air Street, W1Despite having made their name as purveyors of some of the finest steaks in London, Hawksmoor founders Will Beckett and Huw Gott have come to the conclusion that man cannot live on steak alone.  Consequently, the latest instalment of the Hawksmoor franchise sees the team working with renowned chef Mitch Tonks to also include an impressive seafood offering.   Situated on the first floor, overlooking Regent Street, Air Street is also the largest outpost of Hawksmoor, with 235 covers in the restaurant and a further 50 in the bar.

Diners can expect a variety of British sourced fish such as turbot, monkfish and John Dory grilled simply over charcoal, as well as a large selection of shellfish.  Having visited on a number of occasions, however, it seems that Hawksmoor’s reputation for steak is still the biggest draw with most diners still opting for the impeccably sourced and cooked meaty mains, particularly when accompanied with bone marrow gravy and triple cooked chips.

Of course, should the mood for a touch of seafood still take your fancy then starters such as Lobster cocktail, Roast scallops with white port & garlic or Brixham crab on toast will certainly hit the spot.  If you somehow still have room for desserts, then the pleasure continues with obscenely indulgent puddings including various Sundaes and Toffee apple cake.

As with all Hawksmoor interiors, reclaimed materials have been used throughout to create a comfortable lived-in feel, although Air Street also takes inspiration from its glamorous location to include Art Deco touches.

The venue also houses a glamorous cocktail bar that pays homage to the Fumoir bar at Claridges and also offers a short menu of tempting bar snacks.  The menu takes the theme of a ‘toddy timetable’ (or drinks to suit different times of the day), with a particular focus on original drinks created by Hawksmoor bartenders; the Full-Fat Old Fashioned for example uses a homemade butter infused-bourbon, painstakingly made over a number of hours with large quantities of bourbon, clarified butter and a sous-vide machine.
