Returning to its former name and glorious good looks is The Earl Derby – a proper pub serving honest food and drink on the bustling thoroughfare that is Kilburn High Road.  The expansive pub is decked out in elegant tones of navy and grey, with reclaimed timber flooring, exposed brickwork and rustic oak panelling. Curved Chesterfield-style sofas, distressed tables, hanging pendant lamps and vintage chandeliers complete the cosy pub look.  The menu keeps things pretty traditional too, with dishes including Beef Brisket & Beetroot Hash with Fried Egg; Cider & Tarragon Battered Cod; and Chicken, Ham Hock & Leek Pie.  www.theearlderbykilburn.co.uk

1710 Newsletter 2 October 2013 Belvedere Pink Grapefruit

Having established itself as one of the most recognisable and respected vodka brands around, Belvedere has spent the last few years developing a range of flavoured variants that continue its reputation as purveyors of great taste.  The range includes everything from Citrus to Bloody Mary, but taking its place amongst our favourite flavoured vodkas is the Belvedere Pink Grapefruit.  Always playing second fiddle to other citrus fruit such as oranges and lemons, grapefruit is seriously underused in the cocktail world.  However, Belvedere has more than done the fruit justice.  By macerating only fresh grapefruit and peels with their renowned Polish vodka, the flavour provides an initial sweetness followed by a touch of refreshing sharpness and an ultimately smooth experience; a single sip will have any spirits enthusiast reaching for the bottle next time they require a citrus element to their cocktail.  Try it in a host of classic drinks – including Cosmopolitans and even with tonic – for a delicious twist on familiar flavours.  Available from good spirits retailers for around £35.  www.belvederevodka.com

Soulful Onepots

1715 Newsletter 2 October 2013 We’re rarely impressed by ready-meal type things, but we reckon these delicious Soulful Onepots could be just the thing we need to get us through the winter months.  The antithesis of convenience foods found on most supermarket shelves, the Onepots are cooked by hand using unprocessed ingredients (such as black barley, spelt and kelp noodles), free-range 100% British meats and plenty of flavour; they even contain 2 of your 5-a-day.  Amongst the five flavours are Pulled Pork Stew with British chorizo, Moroccan Chicken Tagine and an award-winning veggie Butternut, Lentil & Spinach hotpot.  Just stick them in the microwave for a couple of minutes and you’ve got yourself a quick, easy and healthy lunch or dinner.  £3.49 from www.Ocado.com
