Red Pocket, SW11

Located on the riverside in the elegant surroundings of the Hotel Verta, Red Pocket promises to transport guests to an Oriental oasis in the heart of London.

Offering stunning panoramic views of the river, large floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with natural light. Design features include, Chinese artwork, chinoiserie screens and authentic artefacts such as Buddha sculptures and Tibetan cabinets.  It’s every bit as impressive as London’s many other upmarket Chinese restaurants.

When it comes to the business end of the restaurant, it’s a pleasure to find that the food is also more than a match for the best that London has to offer.   A large open kitchen adds a touch of theatre to the experience and it’s particularly interesting to watch the chefs showing off their intricate dim sum preparation skills.

Having spent 20 years in kitchens across the Orient and a more recent stint at Hakkasan, Chef Weng Kong Wong’s menu provides an array of familiar Cantonese dishes alongside the occasional departure into other parts of Asia.   Traditional dim sum dishes were an absolute triumph, including Xiao Long Bao (small dumplings with a soupy filling) that packed intricate layers of juicy meat and crab flavours in each bite; and Scallop & Prawn dim sum filled with the plumpest and freshest seafood we have experienced in this style of dish.  The Peking Duck is a must too and is served over two courses – with pancakes and as an additional course cooked with your choice of sauce.   For a truly decadent meal, guests can also indulge in Crab with Foie Gras Sauce and Chillean Sea Bass  or go crazy with Abalone at £238 a pop!

This leads us onto the cost of the culinary brilliance and extravagance.  With its impressive location across the pond from Chelsea, it was never going to be a bargain so don’t be surprised to see your bill soar to anywhere between £60-£80/head without drinks; to be fair, though, the cause isn’t helped by having so many tempting dishes to choose from!
