Since opening in 2012, The Rookery has quickly become a popular hang-out for locals and it’s no surprise to see why. Located on its own, right in between the hustle and bustle of the restaurants and bars on Clapham High Street and Clapham South, The Rookery provides a lively but slightly more grown up atmosphere to the venues surrounding it.
The interior is all exposed brick-work and cables, bare suspended light bulbs, white ceramic tiles, zinc topped tables and mismatched vintage wooden chairs. Earlier on in the week, the lighting and laid back tunes make it an ideal spot for a date or catch up with friends whilst on Friday and Saturday nights the energy goes up a gear as The Rookery fills up with groups eating and drinking to the beat of guest DJs.
The menu takes an unpretentious and appealing approach with an array of dishes that you’d be just as happy popping in for during the week as you would served-up as a weekend treat. Starters include Salt-hake croquettes with aioli; Chicken liver parfait; and Mussels in white wine, garlic & shallots. The eclectic selection of mains include Roast Cornish hake, spiced butternut squash, lemongrass & ginger; Slow-cooked Hampshire pork shoulder, BBQ sauce, slaw & fries; and a giant Pheasant, partridge, prune & tarragon pie with a suet crust. Desserts keep things simple yet tempting too, including Apple & sultana crumble and Bitter chocolate tart with peanut butter ice cream.
Portions are generous, cooking is top drawer and with seriously appealing pricing, The Rookery certainly sets a solid benchmark amongst glitzier local rivals.
