The Clock House, SE22

The Clock House 223x300 The Clock House, SE22If we were going to put our money on London’s next foodie destination area then we’d be tempted to put a cheeky punt on Dulwich/Forest Hill.  So we might be slightly biased because of our proximity to the area, but it’s definitely somewhere that’s experiencing a culinary upgrade at the moment.

Case in point is the The Clock House.  Fresh from a stunning refit, this formerly tired old-boozer overlooking Peckham Rye Common is now a truly stylish pub.   Choose your favourite space and enjoy a drink with friends in the bar with its exposed brick walls, beautiful curved, tiled bar and original fireplace; or in warmer weather, sip a sundowner on whitewashed wooden picnic benches on the outdoor terrace overlooking the common.  Add to this jam jar cocktails and craft beers and you’ve got the perfect local hang-out.

More than just a stylish space however, the food is also worth visiting The Clock House for.  The menu focuses on small, seasonal sharing plates served from the theatre-style kitchen.  Diners can choose a combination of dishes including Duck carpaccio, fennel & hazelnuts; Ham hock terrine with pickles & sourdough toast; or the pub’s quirky bread served in a miniature terracotta flower pot.

If you want something more substantial then there are plenty of mains to tempt, including braised beef short rib & bone marrow cottage pie; steamed mussels, coconut, lemongrass & chilli broth; and a proper British beef burger.  The sweet-toothed will no doubt delight in the super-stodgy Marmalade bread & butter pudding with chocolate sorbet or Honey & thyme ice cream with honeycomb brittle.

If it’s a morning pick-me-up that you’re after then a proper brunch menu is also available from 9am, featuring everything from Buttermilk pancakes to Banger butties.  In fact, you can visit pretty much any time of the day and The Clockhouse will have a dish to tempt the tastebuds and a place to park your posterior until closing time!
