Alyn Williams @ The Westbur Alyn Williams at The Westbury, W1In a world where restaurateurs have somehow convinced us that it’s acceptable to have to wait for hours for our table before promptly being kicked off the second your hastily delivered bill has been paid, it’s refreshing to visit somewhere that still provides a proper dining experience – you know, the kind where you’re a welcome guest, not a paying customer.

Following eight years perfecting his craft with Marcus Wareing in the Berkeley Hotel, East Ham born Alyn Williams stepped into the spotlight with the opening of his eponymous restaurant in the autumn of 2011.  He has certainly made an impact, with a Michelin star, Three AA Rosette Award, top 15 ranking in the UK’s 100 Best Restaurants and National Chef of the Year crown catapulting Alyn amongst the constellation of London’s top restaurant stars.

Alyn’s cooking uses neither smoke nor mirrors (or burgers and fried chicken!) to impress.  Seasonal ingredients are freshly sourced, whilst cooking is straightforward to ensure the best flavours are bought out.  Presentation is eye-catching and of the kind you salivate over whilst watching an episode of Professional Masterchef.   Even the sight of the cheese and port trolley gliding across the room is enough to get the taste buds tingling.

The best way to experience the restaurant is by ordering the tasting menu.  The seven-courses showcase all of the creativity and flair that one would expect.  Highlights include Orkney scallop with cuttlefish, mint and caraway; Cod, coco beans, pastis and winter truffle; and 50 day aged middle white pork with quince, chicory, parsnip & liquorice.  Accompany your meal with a few glasses of sommelier recommended wine from the extensive list and you’ve got yourself a meal to reminisce over in weeks to come.

Considering you really feel that the chefs have worked for their money and not just plonked a piece of expensive meat on an expensive grill, the value is commendable too, with pricing ranging from £25 for a three course lunch, to what must be one of the best value tasting menus in London for £60.
