Experimental Food Society Spectacular, E14.  16-17 November 

A must-visit for any food lover, The Experimental Food Society Spectacular is a display by Britain’s most talented and pioneering gourmet artists to challenge your perception of food and show you that there is more to it than just eating and drinking.  The awe inspiring assemblage includes food inspired magicians, artists, futurologists and model-makers to name but a few.  More than just a visual experience, the event also offers guests a sensory feast in which they can meet these pioneering foodies first hand, take part in one of the interactive exhibits and eat edible art.  Tickets are £5.

1st Birthday Party @ Floripa, EC2. 21 November

Shoreditch’s South American favourite, Floripa, is marking its first birthday by hosting The Road To Rio, a birthday carnival celebrating the venue’s eclectic musical tastes with performances from a range of live acts and DJs.  The carnival birthday acts will include the twelve-piece reggae and samba band Eri Okan, Texan-born singer-songwriter Shea Segar and the renowned French electro-pop folk group We Are Knights, as well as breakdancing act Floor Rippers.  Additionally, those wanting to do their bit for Movember can sip on the specially created ‘Movarita’ cocktail safe in the knowledge that they will also be contributing to the charity.  Entry is free, kicking off from 8.30pm.

Naamyaa Café, EC1

Sister restaurant to Busaba Eathai, the latest project from renowned restaurateur, Alan Yau, is an all-day dining café offering a collection of food that captures the spirit of Bangkok. The menu offers Siam heritage classics, Bangkok street food and Western café staples, retaining Siam traditions and absorbing the colonial influences from its neighbouring countries and the new world.  The key dish on the menu however, is the Naamyaa, which refers to the sauce that is cooked in traditional terracotta pots to be eaten with fresh rice noodles.

1521 Newsletter 14 November 2012Barrio Bars have brought their inimitable brand of Latin attitude to the East End with the opening of their latest venture on bustling Shoreditch High Street.  The stylish, quirky and colourful Latin American inspired bar invites guests to explore its two sides – Barrio Downtown and Barrio Uptown.  Uptown provides an elegant yet fun space, where shirt -braced bartenders take exquisite care in crafting classic cocktails.  Downtown is where the real fun happens though, with a mix of Latin cocktail creations, live DJ’s, a late licence every night and a food menu that skips across Latin America, taking you from brunch through to night.

The latest instalment of the Hawksmoor franchise sees the team working with renowned chef Mitch Tonks to also include a seafood offering that’s every bit as tempting as its renowned steaks.  Diners can expect a variety of British sourced fish such as turbot, monkfish and John Dory grilled simply over charcoal, as well as a large selection of shellfish.  Situated on the first floor, overlooking Regent Street, Air Street is also the largest outpost of Hawksmoor, with 235 covers in the restaurant and a further 50 in the bar.  As with all Hawksmoor interiors, reclaimed materials have been used throughout to create a comfortable lived-in feel, although Air Street also takes inspiration from its glamorous location to include Art Deco touches.

580 Ltd, the independent pub company behind The Owl & Pussycat in Shoreditch, has joined forces with rising star, Ben Spalding  – ex head chef of Michelin-starred Roganic – to provide Islington locals with somewhere to challenge their tastebuds.  The menu showcases Ben’s serious cooking skills, with dishes including ‘Chicken on a brick’ – a London house brick coated in a caramel glaze, pairing chicken liver mousse with crispy chicken skin, circled by a mix of sweetcorn kernels, lingon berries, pearl barley & a white onion puree.  The bar also plays its part to ensure a great night out, with cocktails designed by renowned drinks consultancy, the Soulshakers and an international beer list.

Bone Daddies, W1

Soho isn’t exactly lacking in interesting lunch spots and the latest to join them is the somewhat creepily named Bone Daddies.  There’s no murderous behaviour going on though, because it’s actually playfully named in honour of the traditional Japanese bone stock that forms the basis of its ramen dishes.  Ross Shonhan, former Head Chef of Zuma London, has created a menu of traditional cloudy broths of fish, pork and chicken bones stirred up with a delicious dash of originality.  Bone Daddies is also the first restaurant outside of Japan to serve Asahi’s ‘Super Creamy Head’ beer, whilst the old-school rock’n'roll beats in the restaurant will keep things pretty fun too.  Bone Daddies, 30-31 Peter Street, London W1F 0AP

Charbonnel et Walker Appleton Estate Rum Truffles

Like Simon Cowell and his high-waisted trousers, rum and chocolate were made for each other.  Rarely will you find this match more delicious than in these truly decadent truffles.  The heavenly collaboration sees the Queen’s chocolatiers, Charbonnel et Walker, working with the Jamaican rum experts at Appleton Estate.  Each truffle is handmade with bitter-sweet dark chocolate and filled with a soft creamy ganache that’s been infused with the smooth buttery, brown sugar notes of Appleton Estate 12 Year Old.  To add the finishing touch to the luxurious treat, the truffles are then rolled in rich, dark chocolate flakes.  #Drool!  Available from Charbonnel et Walker for £11.95

David Oliver Wild Shot British Game Soups
With shooting season well into its stride and soups making themselves the default choice during chilly lunchtimes, David Oliver Fine Foods has introduced its new selection of rich and hearty Wild Shot British Game Soups.   The three varieties include a thoroughly filling Pheasant Mulligatawny, a more subtle veg filled Partridge Broth and a properly warming Spiced Venison Soup.  Like all of their produce, the soups are packed full of only quality ingredients and slow-cooked to produce terrifically tasty creations.  Priced at £3.59 for a two serving portion, not only are they delicious but they’re great value too.  Available from Waitrose.

Purity Vodka
1517 Newsletter 14 November 2012With the rise in popularity of more flavoursome spirits like whisky, gin and even tequila, vodka’s position as the UK’s most popular spirit has been under serious threat of late.  However, for those of you who still choose it as your spirit of choice, vodka really doesn’t get much better than Purity.  Made from organic ingredients in a 13th century castle in Sweden, it’s the fastidious distillation process devised by Master Blender Thomas Kuuttanen that really makes the difference.  Without getting too technical, most vodka is basically a good white spirit that has been distilled a few times before going through a fairly simple filtration process to provide a clean flavour. Purity, on the other hand, doesn’t require filtration because it is painstakingly distilled 34 times (!!).  This essentially leaves far more flavour and character in the vodka, whilst also being incredibly refined.  The experts agree too, with Purity winning the Vodka Masters Awards in 2011 and 2012, making it the only vodka to have won the awards consecutively.   Available for around £40 from good spirits retailers.
