Innerplace Summer Party @ The Retreat, EC1. 10 August

1441 Newsletter 8 August 2012 Exclusive concierge service Innerplace is hosting their renowned summer party at Olympic pop-up The Retreat and for the first time, we’re all invited!  Housed in an historic Grade 2 listed building, the evening kicks off at 8pm when guests will be treated to a cocktail and canapé reception.   Entertainment throughout the night includes everything from live DJ sets to Games-inspired performances from some of London’s most fascinating acts; they will of course also be showing the games on big screens too.  Normally reserved for members, this event is open to all discerning Londoners and anyone who wants to join Innerplace will have their £75 joining fee waved.  To join the guestlist simply email

‘Storyville – A hot-blooded tribute to New Orleans’, EC2. 11 August

The owners of the Nightjar and Krankbrother have combined to bring London a night of fine music, drinks and dancing inspired by New Orleans.  Storyville seeks to recreate the precocious and hot-blooded culture borne out of the famous bordellos of New Orleans.  Guests will be led on a musical jourey complemented by fast-stepping dancers and a series of performance artists dedicated to bringing the spirit of the city alive.  Food and drink will also echo the best of The Big Easy with a range of traditional serves from the Enigma Absinthe bar and gastronomic delicacies such as Gumbo and Jambalaya.  Tickets are £25 from

The Food Network on Fire Festival, Covent Garden East Piazza. 17-19 August

Sunshine or not, with barbecuing on everyone’s minds head down to the Food Network on Fire Festival and let them do the hard work for you.  The free festival, organised by TV channel The Food Network UK, includes a mixture of great food, live music and entertainment. The festival will also bring together some of Britain’s best-loved TV chefs including Jun Tanaka, Andy Bates, and Tristan Welch who will demonstrate their skills. With over 30 of London’s top street food vendors and restaurants serving their best BBQ fayre there will also be plenty of sizzling cuisine for guests to tuck into.

Tequila Tuesdays @ El Camion, W1

Forget vodka, gin and bourbon – 2012 is the year of Tequila according to… tequila fans!  The Mexican spirit is actually developing a real fan base as drinks fans begin to experience how good it can actually be once you look beyond the stuff that’s mostly consumed at Student Unions.  To get a real understanding of Tequila, head down to El Camion on Tuesday evenings where they are inviting top experts to host fun talks and tastings on the subject.  Tickets are £25, which includes the tequila and food for the evening. 1443 Newsletter 8 August 2012Ping Pong/Table Tennis/Wiff-Waff – whatever you want to call it, since the ever outspoken Boris J laid claim to it as a British sport, the game has been steadily growing in popularity.  It’s no surprise then that someone has taken the trend and turned it into a foodie concept.  Created by the management team behind Bungalow 8, PING combines a ping pong games room with a rustic Italian food and a bar – obviously!  The restaurant provides a menu of bruschettas, flatbreads and unique pizzas, including The Truffle (Fior di latte mozzarella, truffle sauce, roast potato and homemade sausage) and The Ceviche (Focaccia base, labneh goats cheese, cod ceviche, passion fruit sauce and basil leaves).   With room for 420 revellers in the bar and games areas, it should be a great party spot too.

Duck & Waffle, EC2

The team behind SushiSamba have launched their second high-flying restaurant at Heron Tower with the opening of Duck & Waffle.  Located on the 40th floor, Duck & Waffle will embrace the frenetic pace of London by staying open for food and drinks 24/7.  The modern European menu will evolve throughout the day (and night), although unlike a number of other all night venues, the menu aims to provide something more sophisticated.  Breakfast includes a Foie Gras ‘All Day Breakfast’, whilst the all-day menu features Old Spot Pork Pie with smoked quail egg and Seafood Pot Roast.  Visit as the sun starts to rise and the late night menu includes delights such as Roasted Galloway Veal Marrow Bones with ox cheek marmalade, pickled girolles & parsley.

The Big Smoke @ The Elk Bar, SW6

1444 Newsletter 8 August 2012With a few rays of sunshine creeping through, The Big Smoke has opened to provide the ideal place for West Londoners to enjoy a spot of outdoor eating and drinking.  Enclosed in a wooden smoke shack in the garden of Elk Bar, guests relax on rustic benches, surrounded by exotic plants and bright umbrellas as they munch on the BBQ menu and drink beer and tobacco infused cocktails.  The food is cooked using a proper charcoal BBQ and includes everything from ribs and Peri Peri chicken to pulled pork and Beer Can chicken.  They have even put on a ‘Man v Food’ style challenge, comprising of 30 spicy wings, horseradish coleslaw, fries, blue cheese sauce and The Holy Mother of God sauce.

Banca, W1

The team behind such esteemed venues as The Arts Club and Zuma have embarked on their latest attempt in premium dining with the launch of Banca in Mayfair.  Making no bones about its high-end aspirations, the restaurant has been launched to be one of London’s most glamorous Italian restaurants with a fusion of classic luxury interiors with traditional cucina style.  The menu celebrates Northern Italian dishes such as baked Sea Scallops with spicy Calabria N’duja, chargrilled Asparagus with slow cooked Egg & Black Truffle and Saffron Risotto.  The restaurant also features separate hot and cold bars with a traditional bread oven on display as well as a bar area serving classic Italian cocktails.

Already the proud owner of Crazy Homies, the renowned Mexican restaurant and home to the Chamucos Tequila lounge, successful Restaurateur Tom Conran has continued to indulge his passion for all things Mexican with the launch of Tequila Chamucos.  Combining the finest quality Tequila with the truly unique design that the Conran dynasty are renowned for, Chamucos looks set to become the cult spirit of choice.  Distilled in the alpine forests of Mazamitla in Jalisco using only 100% weber blue Agave, the production process also somewhat bizarrely includes classical music being played during the double distillation process.  Available in Blanco and aged Reposado and Anejo variants, starting at around £45 from good drinks retailers.
