The Rosendale, SE21

The Rosendale 219x300 The Rosendale, SE21In the greenest corner of South East London, The Rosendale in West Dulwich has been reborn courtesy of peranial pub-upgrade specialists, Renaissance Pubs.  With other pubs in their impressive portfolio including The Avalon in Clapham and The Bolingbroke in Battersea, the Renaissance team certainly know what they are doing, so there’s no doubt that The Rosendale is set to become a local favourite.

Once a Victorian coaching inn, the generously proportioned pub boasts a spacious bar, large dining area, two private rooms and three distinctly individual gardens which now stand proud at the heart of the neighbourhood.  Totally transformed, The Rosendale exudes a handsome elegance.  The high ceilings and galvanised steel chandeliers provide a sense of grandeur, whilst the fireplace, vintage London theatre posters and smattering of antique prints create a cosy and atmospheric space.  With a rotation of British brews, a few cocktails and an extensive wine list, the drinks list keeps things interesting too.

Like the rest of the Renaissance stable of pubs, The Rosendale features a predominately British pub menu with an extensive of use of local ingredients, including meat from Renaissance Pubs’ very own Locks Drove Farm in Hampshire.  Before you look at the main menu, it’s certainly worth ordering a cheeky Scotch egg from the bar menu – crisp, meaty and with a beautifully runny yolk, no visit to The Rosendale is complete without one.

Signature dishes on the main menu include Ham hock & chicken croquettes with piccalilli alongside Squid & cuttlefish salad to start.  Mains are of a good standard too, with delicious Fish & chips and a hearty Rabbit loin & braised leg ‘cottage pie’ with wild mushrooms – perfectly for a chilly winter’s evening.  Desserts are absolutely ginormous – easily enough for two share – but prove to be the only slight disappointment of the meal, with neither the overly stodgy and sweet Sticky toffee pudding nor the heavy Banoffee pie maintaining the standards of the rest of the meal.  Overall value is impressive however; with starters at around £6, mains at £12, generous portions and good quality food, The Rosendale is the kind of pub we would all be glad to have near us.
