Despite its residence in The Langham, one of London’s most prestigious hotels, and having one of the city’s most elegant and beautifully designed dining rooms, The Landau has never really hit the heights expected of a restaurant with such enviable credentials. However, now that two of Britain’s culinary royalty, Albert and Michel Roux Jr have taken over the helm, we expect the restaurant to become one of London’s hottest tickets.
Whilst they may not be cooking, make no mistake – this is no simple exercise in branding. The father and son duo have collaborated for the first time in 19 years to bring their legendary culinary expertise and creativity to launch Roux at The Landau. At the helm is Roux protégé Chris King, whose impressive experience includes having worked at Le Gavroche over the past seven years.
Head down early and you may be lucky enough to get a spot in their popular and super-glam bar, The Artesian. Drinks come courtesy of multi-award winning mixologist Alex Kratena, whose repertoire of innovative and classic cocktails are some of London’s finest. The bar houses one of London’s largest collection of rums and the brave can also try one of Alex’s scorpion based cocktails!
As you’d expect, Chris’s menus reflect the Roux trademark of classically-constructed French dishes, with a lighter contemporary style and presentation. Dishes include starters of Rosemary scented cauliflower velouté with romanesco & Serrano ham and a quite brilliant Sauté of Landes foie gras with almonds, radishes & sherry; mains feature delicately cooked fish such as Roast wild sea bass with globe artichoke barigoule & arbequina olive oil and hearty meat dishes including Grilled double rib of French veal with bone marrow baked roseval potatoes & roast garlic jus. Desserts are expertly created plates of temptation including Spiced plum soufflé with red wine ice cream & sablé crumb and Bitter chocolate millefeuille with maple ice cream & salted pecans.
Dishes range from good to brilliant, but with starters costing around £16 and mains in the £25-£35 bracket, you would expect nothing less. For £80, a well thought-out tasting menu is also available, featuring many of the highlights from the menu.
Wine enthusiasts will also enjoy drinking their way through the extensive list. Long-serving head sommelier Zack Saghir knows his way around a wine list like few others in London, and his repertoire to choose from has been enhanced with the addition of rare wines hand-picked by legendary Le Gavroche former General Manager Silvano Giraldin.
Dinner for two (excluding drinks): £120
