s Newsletter 9 February 2011New Openings…

Chabrot, SW1

1090 Newsletter 9 February 2011Ask a team of Michelin pedigree restaurant professionals to create a new venue and one could reasonably expect another all dancing super-restaurant that appears all the fashion at the moment.  However, operations director Yann Chevris (Nobu London, L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon) and head chef Thierry Laborde (L’Oranger, Le Gavroche) have bucked the trend by opening Chabrot, a low-profile and intimate restaurant reminiscent of a classic French bistro.  The menu features classic dishes from across Southern France including Bone marrow, Duck liver pâté and a selection of cheese. Bigger plates include Leg of milk fed lamb with white beans; Whole roasted foie gras with raisins; and Prawns a la plancha.

Ilia, SW3

Seasoned restaurateurs, Giuliano Lotto and Soren Jessen (of Il Baretto and One Lombard St. fame respectively) look to have created another winner with the launch of Ilia, their new Italian restaurant in Kensington.  Head Chef Omar Agostini’s previous experience includes working at Hélène Darroze at The Connaught and Sofitel Rome Villa Borghese, so big things are expected.  The menu is made up of regional and modern Italian dishes, many inspired by Omar’s family background in Rome, including Burrata with Parma ham; Monkfish stew with clams & mussels; and Italian trifle.

Polpo Cicheti Bar, W1

Famed for bringing the rustic flavours of traditional Venetian bacaros to London, Polpo has added another layer to its offering with the launch of its new Cicheti Bar.  Housed underneath the main dining room in the 18th century townhouse, the menu offers quick snacks and glasses of Italian wine in an informal setting.  Guests simply need to point and eat, with small bites including Artichokes with prosciutto, Chili marinated baby octopus and Mortadella wrap with gorgonzola & walnuts.

Edgerton Original Pink Dry Gin

1087 Newsletter 9 February 2011Anything pink must, by default, be suitable for Valentines Day.  However, don’t let the girly hue of this gin fool you.   Indeed, the ‘pink gin’ concept was a cocktail originally created by the mighty British Navy to make the spirit more palatable.  At 47% abv, this is a serious gin that makes sure your long tonic or cocktail does not wilt in the glass.  The blush is derived from extract of pomegranate whilst attention to quality has lead Edgerton to all corners of the world for the finest botanicals, including Mexico for Damiana, and to West Africa for the legendary spice Grains of Paradise. For extra-appeal, Edgerton Gin is distilled in London in limited quantities only, so should make a great addition to a discerning gin-lovers  collection. £31.50 from

1091 Newsletter 9 February 2011How to get free Nando’s (and lose your dignity)

Love it or hate it, with chicken shops popping up everywhere, Nando’s is becoming a permanent high street fixture. LFLD’s Dan Lloyd (a serious Nando’s fan) was getting sick of paying for his chicken in a pitta bread but heard that there may be a way around it - so here’s what he did…
