Say the term ‘French restaurant’ and most of us conjure images of fine-dining establishments with weird and wonderful menus that are best suited to special occasions. However, in Les Deux Salons, we have found one of those rare restaurants that we could happily eat at pretty much every day of our lives.
The restaurant also takes a different turn for owners Anthony Demetre and Will Smith, who are better know for their Michelin starred efforts, Wild Honey and Arbutus. Whilst those restaurants are known for stripping away the frills from fine dining, Les Deux Salons actually adds a few special touches to traditional French country cuisine. Set over two magnificent storeys, the brasserie style restaurant is expensively kitted out in mosaic marble floors, impressive bronze and gold fittings and big leather banquet seating, all juxtaposed with dark woods for the tables and bar area. Whilst the menu is the same for both, the ground floor provides a livelier dining experience than the more intimate first floor.
Which brings as nicely onto the food. The menu provides something for every mood, with a regular selection of traditional terrines, soups and salads offered alongside the varied selection of starters and mains. Starters include classics such as Warm onion tarts and Herefordshire snail & bacon pie as well as more innovative dishes like sweet and tender Rosé veal wrapped in a ravioli of confit lemon. Mains are just as appetising with options of Roast rabbit with winter vegetables & chorizo, Roast cod with slow cooked onions & sage and a selection beautifully cooked meats from the Josper grill. The sweet toothed can finish off on Rum baba, classic Crème brulee or a traditional Paris Brest with praline cream. Good food requires good wine and again, Les Deux Salons delivers, with a comprehensive and well priced international wine list with most bottles available in carafes as well as by the glass.
