For every Nobu and The Ivy that is name-checked as a celebrity hang-out, there exists a far less conspicuous restaurant providing the same, if not better dining experience for those moments when London’s rich and famous want to dine without the blinding flashbulbs of the paparazzi. The Rib Room is the perfect example of the latter. The restaurant is housed in the the five-star Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel, making it perfect for dropping into after a hard day’s shopping in nearby Knightsbridge and Sloane Street.
Walk into the hotel and your gaze is immediately met by the delectable cakes and treats prominently displayed in the glamorous gold-adorned ‘Chinoiserie’ lounge area. The resident harpist only adds to the feeling that you have just entered a world where money quite possibly does grow on trees.
The Rib Room is a far less intimidating affair, providing a large and comfortable dining room spruced up with pieces of art and sculptures throughout. Originally launched in 1961, the restaurant has become renowned amongst those in the know for its signature dish, a fine roast rib of Aberdeen Angus. The classic British menu also includes some truly delicious seafood and shellfish, including a particularly outstanding dish of the sweetest and plumpest Caramelised scallops I’ve experienced, accompanied by slow cooked belly of pork and an orange & ginger dressing. As you’d expect, there is also a comprehensive wine list to complement the hearty menu.
So what’s the catch? The prices. With starters at around £18 and mains at around £35, this place is unashamedly aimed at those where money isn’t a consideration. However, they are providing genuinely top quality food and they’ve clearly got enough customers who appreciate them!
