proud cabaret Proud Cabaret, EC3Opening a restaurant in London is a precarious affair, with the location being one of the most difficult decisions to make.  So opening in one of London’s lesser known back streets is probably not the most obvious choice.  However, judging by their packed reservations book, Proud Cabaret seems to have figured out the formula for creating a bustling venue where others dare not try. 


And what a formula it is.  With a sumptuous interior inspired by the illicit glamour of a 1920s Berlin speakeasy, guests are treated to some of London’s finest burlesque, cabaret and vaudeville entertainers.  Visitors have the option of paying £10/head to enjoy the action from the large bar area or making a complete night of it with a slap-up meal in the main restaurant on Wednesday-Saturday evenings. The venue is home to top promoters Lady Luck Club and White Mischief as well as West End sensations, Globe Girls.  These names may mean little to you and I, but to one of my guests – who had bizarrely recently written a dissertation on the art of burlesque – they are the equivalent of JLS to a bunch of hormonal teenage girls. 


The restaurant’s menu has been designed by Michelin-trained Head Chef Finlay Logan and takes great British classics as its inspiration.  Diners have the option of a £37.50/head or a ‘Luxury’ £45/head menu.  It’s all appealing but simple enough to not detract one’s attention to far from the performances.  Our starters included Wild rabbit & salsify terrine and a simple Avocado & mozzarella salad, with the quality of ingredients shining through.  For mains we both opted for a dish of Roast label Anglais chicken, with a creamy braised leek & bacon sauce.  Desserts were a plate of Neal’s Yard cheese and a White chocolate rice pudding. 


Concepts like this are few and far between, so it’s great that Proud has executed it with such aplomb.  Proud Cabaret really provides a great night out and whether you’re having dinner or just enjoying some cocktails at the bar, the quality of the entertainment makes it a great value evening too.
