Jom Makan is a no-nonsense, minimal restaurant with fast, fresh, great value Malaysian cuisine. Translated, it means ‘let’s go eat’, and eat we did. And then we ate a little more. We ordered so much that our lovely waitress actually recommended that we move from our already generous table for two, onto a table for four! Granted, I had just come from the gym and Mr Pants has a bottomless pit of a stomach, but on this occasion, even I was concerned about our ravenous appetite.
Situated right next to Trafalgar Square, Jom Makan provides a colourful and airy contemporary space to enjoy its Malaysian cuisine. For those that don’t know, Malaysian food sits somewhere between Thai and Indian food, providing more curries and spice than the former, but also noodles, broths and many of the ingredients used in the latter. Indeed, the menu is packed full of interesting dishes that reflect the street food vendors and kitchens of Malaysia.
The food comes out as soon as it is ready, so there is no starters/main course malarkey. The Beef Satay was tasty and well grilled, whilst the Roti Canai (Crispy flat bread served with lamb curry) is an absolute must; rich spices and lovely chunks of lamb, with a nice roti to mop up all of the delicious sauce. We ordered another one of these as soon as we had a bite of the first portion! Nasi Goreng (Spicy fried rice with prawn, squid, chicken and vegetables) and Mee Hailam (Stir-fied noodles with seafood, fish cake and vegetables in soy gravy) were both generous of portion and full of Far Eastern flavour. As expected, stay away from the desserts and you can’t go wrong. Accompanied by a few expertly chosen Tiger Beers, Jom Makam provided a tasty and great value meal to keep us going until our midnight snack!
